Parasite Control & Prevention

Monthly parasite preventives give broad spectrum protection from external and internal parasites.

Parasites can severely harm your pets if left untreated. These pests often get to your loyal companions through other animals, their environment and sometimes even from your clothing or shoes. At our hospital we regularly treat parasitic infections and we’ve implemented a prevention program for our beloved patients.

What parasites might affect my pet?

Some parasites can live inside your pets (these are called internal parasites) while others affect the external body. Internal parasites usually live in the digestive system. To detect these parasites our team may examine your pet’s stool, urine or blood samples. Internal parasites include:

  • Heartworm
  • Hookworm
  • Roundworm
  • Coccidia

External parasites live on your pet’s body and are diagnosed with physical examination and visual checks. Examples of external parasites are:

  • Ear mites
  • Fleas
  • Ticks
  • Mange mites
  • Ringworm

What are signs of parasites in my pet?

The signs that your pet has a parasitic infestation may not be so obvious in the early stages. For this reason it is important to follow a strict prevention plan and have regular testing. Some parasites if left untreated can lead to fatality. Signs of parasites manifest in different ways. Here are some that you should look out for:

  1. Swollen belly
  2. Itching
  3. Lethargy
  4. Redness of the skin
  5. Brown or black discharge in the ear

If you notice any of these signs we encourage you to take your furry friend to a veterinarian. Our team will be able to properly assess and provide treatment for your pet. Schedule an appointment for parasite control at 613-531-3334.

How can I protect my pet from parasites?

A year-round prevention plan is the best way to prevent parasites in your pet. Some parasites such as ticks are more prevalent in the warmer months, however others can survive within the household during the winter months. This is why it is so important not to fall behind on your pet’s medication schedule.
